All you need to know about TOEFL

TOEFL stands for Test Of English as a Foreign Language and is an internationally recognized exam, conducted by ETS (Educational testing System). Students are required to take TOEFL especially if they are going to USA or Canada for either their studies or work. Any student belonging to a non-native English speaking country must take this test to improve his or her chances of getting into a US or Canadian University.

DEATILS OF THE TEST:

Sections- the TOEFL test is divided into 4 sections- Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

Reading- Reading is the first task of the test. You will ideally be given 3 to 5 passages, containing about 700 words each. A total of 36 to 56 questions will be provided, depending on the number of passages. For each passage, the time allotted is 20 minutes. Therefore, the reading section can last from 60 minutes to 100 minutes.

Listening- Listening, the second task of the test, consists of a range of conversations, classroom lectures, and discussions, and you must answer the questions that follow the audio. The audio is not repeated so it is important that you make notes. You may get 4 to 6 lectures and the time allotted for them is between 60 to 90 minutes.

Speaking- The Speaking section is the shortest section of the test which lasts for about 20 minutes. You will be given 6 tasks of speaking, out of which task 3 and task 5 will be conversations between two people and task 5 and task 6 will be monologues.

Writing-This section consists of two tasks, which last for 50 minutes. Time allotted for task 1 is 20 minutes and time allotted for task 2 is 30 minutes. This section assesses your grammatical skills, vocabulary, and your ability to write a well-constructed response that fulfils all the criteria of the questions asked.
Scores- Each section is scored out of 30, making the total achievable score to be 120.

1. TOEFL test is conducted in one single day.

2. The test lasts for 3 hours 10 minutes to 4 hours 20 minutes depending on the number of Reading and Listening sections.

3. The TOEFL scores are valid till 2 years

4. The current registration of the test costs $180 in India

5. The tests in India are held across 46 cities

6. You must register at least 4 days before the exam or a late fee of $40 will be levied.
