TOEFL Overview

Test of English as a Foreign Language – TOEFL is a standardized test to assess the English language ability of non-native English speakers wishing to enroll in good American universities. The test is pretty well accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions and universities. It is one of the most established English language tests which is widely valued and recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in more than 130 countries, which includes Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the United States. This shows that wherever you want to study, the TOEFL test can help you get there. TOEFL score is also accepted by Immigration departments to successfully issue the residential and work visas. Additionally, Medical and licensing agencies use them for professional certification purposes. Last but on the least quite a lot of individuals use them to gauge their progress in learning English as an international language.

Test Format

TOEFL test includes four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. During the test, the candidate is asked to perform on combined tasks so that the above mentioned skills are assessed perfectly.

                                                     TOEFL iBT Test Sections
Section Time Limit Questions Tasks
Reading 60-80 minutes 36–56 questions Read 3 or 4 passages from academic texts and answer questions.
Listening 60-90 minutes 34–51 questions Listen to lectures, classroom discussions and conversations, then answer questions.
Break 10 minutes
Speaking 20 minutes 6 tasks Express an opinion on a familiar topic; speak based on reading and listening tasks.
Writing 50 minutes 2 tasks Write essay responses based on reading and listening tasks; support an opinion in writing.

The TOEFL test may include some extra questions in the Reading or Listening section that actually do not count toward your overall score. There are some questions that enable ETS to make TOEFL test scores comparable across administrations to determine how these questions function under real testing conditions. Always make sure to read the instructions carefully to give your best short for the exam. These instructions include that how many passages you will get and the amount of time the candidate have to respond to questions for the said passages. Be sure to pace with time so that you have ample time to answer all the questions.

An important note here is that Standard English language (QWERTY) computer keyboard is used for the test. We recommend the candidate to practice typing on a QWERTY keyboard before taking the real TOFEL test.

Each of the four TOEFL sections is scored out of 30. The composite for TOEFL will range from 0 to 120 and it is calculated by merging the TOEFL scores for each of the four sections.
