TOEFL Test Exams Syllabus

TOEFL test includes four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. During the test, the candidate is asked to perform on combined tasks so that the above mentioned skills are assessed perfectly. You will always have 20 minutes for Speaking and 50 minutes for writing. Although, reading ranges from 60 to 80 minutes and listening ranges from 60 to 90 minutes due to the experimental questions.

Reading

The first section on TOEFL is the Reading section. Reading will be 60 minutes long and contain 36-42 questions. If you get experimental questions, it’ll be 80 minutes long and contain 48-56 questions. There are three Reading question types: multiple choices, insert a sentence and Reading to Learn. Reading is first scored according to the number of points you get per question and then converted to a scaled score out of 30.

Listening

Listening varies in its length and number of questions due to the possibility of experimental questions. This section can be 60 minutes with 34 questions or 90 minutes with 51 questions. You will listen to four or six lectures and two to three conversations. Each lecture lasts three to five minutes and comes with six questions, while each conversation lasts about three minutes and comes with five questions. There are three types of questions for the Listening section: standard multiple choice, multiple answer and replay. Listening is also first scored according to the number of points you get per question and then converted to a scaled score out of 30.

Speaking

The TOEFL Speaking section lasts just 20 minutes in total. There are two types; independent with 2 tasks and integrated having 4 tasks. The first two tasks; the Independent tasks, require you to speak for 45 seconds about your opinion on familiar topics. The latter four; the integrated tasks, require you to speak for 60 seconds about passages and audio clips. For speaking, each task is scored on a special scale of 0-4. These scores are then summed and converted to a final speaking score on a scale of 0-30.

Writing
